For the first time, WWE will host its first-ever two-night SummerSlam this August. MetLife Stadium will play host, and the professional wrestling behemoth already has a major matchup announced for the upcoming showdown. But there is one match that fans are anticipating more than the rest.
At WrestleMania 41 back in April, John Cena shockingly became a record 17-time WWE Champion when he defeated long-time champ Cody Rhodes in front of a raucous Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Now, the pair will finally clash again in their first singles match since that fateful evening in Sin City. So, who do the bookies think will reign supreme, and what else is there to look forward to at SummerSlam?
Ever since the Leader of the Cenation left Vegas with a record-breaking 17th title, fans have been salivating at the prospect of a rematch against heroic former champion Cody Rhodes. The American Nightmare famously ended Roman Reigns’ record-setting title reign in Philadelphia last year, before going on to hold the title himself for a year and ultimately running into a newly villainous Cena. Now, perhaps surprisingly, online sports betting sites are expected to make the challenger a favorite to embark upon his second title reign.
With the contest still being weeks away, betting sports sites haven’t yet announced their odds for the mouth-watering clash. That has left online sports betting at Bovada enthusiasts eagerly anticipating opportunities to place their bets. When said opportunity arises, chances are that Cody Rhodes will be listed as the odds-on favorite to secure the title, perhaps even being priced as short as 4/11.
That will come as a surprise to WWE fans, especially considering the fact that reigning champion Cena promised that he would ruin professional wrestling by retiring with the title in December and thus leave all future champions somewhat irrelevant. With rumors circulating that Rhodes will be taking time off from the ring to film the upcoming Street Fighter movie, many would have considered the reigning 17-time champ a surefire bet to retain his gold. Well, Cena is clearly not the sure thing that those would have expected, and he could be priced as long as 2/1 when the odds are announced.
There is also a huge joker in the pack in the form of reigning Mr. Money in the Bank, Seth Rollins. The Visionary climbed the ladder in Toronto back in June to win the Money in the Bank ladder match, guaranteeing him a title shot at an opportunity of his choosing. It has been speculated that the former Architect of the Shield could well cash in at SummerSlam, turning the scheduled title match between Cena and Rhodes into a triple threat match like he did to claim his maiden world title at WrestleMania 31 a decade ago.
Odds on such a scenario arising are expected to be priced at around 6/1, and that would certainly be quite the curveball from the WWE creative team. However, with the likes of Paul Heyman, Bron Breakker, and Bronson Reed around Rollins, he certainly has the required firepower to force his way into the main event and leave MetLife Stadium as the Undisputed WWE Champion.
Well, that’s certainly hard to predict. If you’d have asked us a month ago, we’d have said with certainty that Cena would defeat Rhodes again, in similar fashion to his triumph at WrestleMania. However, in recent weeks, there have been hints that the reigning champion seems uneasy being the villain.
John Cena is alone as a 17-time WWE World Champion! 🐐

He was unwilling to strike CM Punk with the championship belt at the recent Night of Champions event in Saudi Arabia, even helping the Second City Saint fight off the aforementioned Rollins and Co. before ultimately securing the victory. If the West Newbury native shows similar restraint again, then the American Nightmare could well stand a chance of winning the title.
But then again, if he does so, where would that leave Cena’s plans of retiring with the title? Would the rest of his 2025 retirement tour simply fizzle out before its December due date? That too seems unlikely.
There is certainly value in betting on Cena retaining the gold, especially as a betting underdog. However, as always when it comes to placing a bet, proceed with caution.
Cena vs Rhodes II is the only match currently confirmed for SummerSlam, but there is plenty more to come. Jade Cargill will receive her first-ever Women’s World Title singles match after winning the Queen of the Ring tournament.
Meanwhile, CM Punk, LA Knight, and Jey Uso seem to have their sights firmly set on Seth Rollins and his cronies, a feud that could well result in a six-man tag team match at MetLife. As well as that, Solo Sikoa and former stablemate Jacob Fatu are also locked in a blood feud over the United States title, and you can expect that war to bulldoze through the Big Apple as well.
